But there is a huge difference between both of them. The only thing that is similar between then is that both show the list of websites you are interested in.

What is difference between search engines and directories?
Search Engines scans the whole internet and makes an index of all the files and when a user searches for any keyword it shows the results that match with the pages in its index. Whereas, directories are categorized into different category and you can search within them for your favorite website. Search engines like Google and Yahoo don’t maintain any kind of category. You just type in your keyword and see the results but categories are the main part of any directory. You can even find sub -categories with a category.

Search Engines normally find the website automatically, you don’t have to add your website into them but web directories requires that you add your website manually into them and when the editors of those directories manually accept your submission then only your listing will be shown in the web directories.
